Maurits Cornelis Escher

Maurits Cornelis Escher werd in 1898 in Leeuwarden geboren maar groeide op in Arnhem waar hij de HBS volgde. Escher was geen studiebol maar was dol op tekenen. Zijn vader wilde dat hij na de HBS een wetenschappelijke opleiding zou gaan doen maar M.C. Escher koos voor een opleiding aan de school voor Bouwkunde en Sierende kunsten in Haarlem. Hier kwam hij in contact met zijn grote leermeester Jessurun de Mesquita van wie hij de liefde voor de grafiek en het spel van wit en zwart leerde. Nadat Escher in 1922 de school verliet maakte hij diverse reizen naar Zuid Europa. In Spanje raakte hij geïnspireerd door de ingewikkelde Moorse decoratiepatronen in het Alhambra. Escher trouwde en vestigde zich in Italië . Met de opkomst van het fascisme verhuisde hij achtereenvolgens naar Zwitserland en België om uiteindelijk in 1941 zich in Baarn te vestigen. De laatste twee jaar van zijn leven woonde Escher in het Rosa Spierhuis in Hilversum. Escher was een secuur kunstenaar die grote roem verwierf om unieke onderwerpen en zijn technische beheersing en perfectie. Escher had een grote belangstelling voor wiskunde, perspectief, onmogelijke constructies, het spel met de dimensies, visuele grapjes en oneindig in elkaar passende geometrische patronen. Zijn oeuvre bestaat grotendeels uit houtsnedes, houtgravures, lithografieën en mezzotints.

Maurits Cornelis Escher was born in Leeuwarden in 1898 but grew up in Arnhem where he attended the HBS. Escher was not academically interested but was fond of drawing. His father preferred him to pursue a scientific education after the HBS but M.C. Escher opted for education at the school for Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem. Here he came into contact with his great teacher Jessurun de Mesquita from whom he learned the love for printmaking and the game of white and black. After Escher left school in 1922 he made several trips to the South of Europe. In Spain, he was inspired by the intricate Moorish decoration patterns in the Alhambra. Escher married a Swiss-Russian girl and settled in Italy. With the rise of fascism, he moved successively to Switzerland and Belgium to finally settle in Baarn in 1941. The last two years of his life, Escher lived in the Rosa Spierhuis in Hilversum. Escher was a meticulous artist who gained great fame for unique subjects and his technical mastery and perfection. He had a great interest in mathematics, perspective, impossible constructions, dimensions, visual jokes and infinitely matching geometrical patterns. His oeuvre consists largely of woodcuts, wood engravings, lithographs, and mezzotints.

莫里茲·科尼利斯·埃舍爾（Maurits Cornelis Escher）是一個奇才。 他與梵谷，倫勃朗，及蒙德里安在國際上共享盛名，都是佔西方藝術史一席之地的荷蘭藝術家。埃舍爾完美的結合了藝術與數學，他那天馬行空的想像力，讓看過他作品的人都難以忘懷。

較不為人知的，是埃舍爾年幼時曾經受到東方藝術的薰陶。他的父親曾是日本天皇在19世紀後期所雇用的水利工程師，在日本生活與工作了多年，而後在返回荷蘭時攜帶了許多中國與日本的藝術品。這些東方藝術的元素也對他後來的作品產生了一定程度的影響。少年的埃舍爾在1922年從藝術學院畢業後，展開了他的南歐之旅。在西班牙他深深為摩爾文化的建築阿汗布拉宮內所見的幾何圖形的鑲嵌著迷。埃舍爾與他的妻兒曾在羅馬居住過一段時間，最後在1941年選擇回到荷蘭定居，這也開啟了他的黃金創作生涯。

埃舍爾的作品裡，顛覆了我們對於現實世界理性的認知。空間，視角，結構等等的變化可以使畫裡那看似有秩序、其實違逆了現實的情境中，演變出一個獨特的小宇宙。它可以是永恆循環的，也可以是無盡無限的；有時是平面轉化成立體的大自然，有時又是凹凸兩面可以轉換共存的。其中更不乏周公夢蝶的禪意境界；畫中人、人中畫、看畫人，環環相扣，難分難解。

埃舍爾透過精準的木刻、石刻、銅刻與板畫來締造出幽微的層次感，融入了複雜的數學原理。他常常用到潘洛斯階梯及三角的理論以及彭加勒對於圓盤的學說。每每圖案中的重重玄機引領著觀畫者，從第一眼的漫不經心到後來的欲罷不能，埃舍爾成功地掌握了如何去顛覆人們的邏輯思維。他締造的魔幻世界是如此的吸引人！
