Is this painting by Dutch artist Wim Bosma (1902-1985) an impression of the legendary concert that Miles Davis gave in 1957 in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam? In the years after the Second World War, Amsterdam was a vibrant center for jazz lovers, especially thanks to legendary locations such as Casablanca and the Cotton Club. The night concerts that took place in the Concertgebouw in the 1950s and 1960s were also legendary. Greats such as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan made a crushing impression on the Dutch public and gave this concert series an almost mythical status. Legendary was the concert of the Miles Davis quintet in 1957 of which a rare live recording was made, known as the Amsterdam Concert. Jazz was prominently present in post-war Amsterdam. In Casablanca, located on the Zeedijk, musicians such as saxophonist Kid Dynamite and trumpeter Teddy Cotton were regular artists. In addition, international greats such as Erroll Garner, Count Basie and Gerry Mulligan performed there. The Cotton Club on the Nieuwmarkt was a meeting place for the Surinamese community and black American soldiers and the place to hear the latest jazz records from America. Wim Bosma was a great lover of jazz as can be seen in this and several other works from the 50s.
