A Painter’s Paradise: The Allure of Orientalism. Wanderers & Dreamers, European Artists in the Middle and Far East

september 10, 2025 tot maart 1, 2027

For centuries, the East has captivated the imagination of European artists, collectors, and travelers alike. The 19th and early 20th centuries saw an era of adventurous painters who ventured beyond familiar borders in search of inspiration, mystery, and the unknown. These artists immersed themselves in the rich cultures of the Middle East, North Africa, and the Far East, translating their experiences into magnificent works of art. Their paintings, watercolors, and drawings are not mere representations—they are visual narratives of discovery, longing, and admiration for distant lands and peoples.

In my upcoming exhibition, I seek to bring together a selection of fine Orientalist works created in the Middle and Far East by European artists.

Among the most remarkable Dutch artists to embark on these journeys was Willem de Famars Testas, perhaps the Netherlands' only true Orientalist. His delicate watercolors, drawings and paintings capture the essence of Egypt life and history with extraordinary detail and authenticity. Alongside him, the works of Marius Bauer, known for his atmospheric depictions of the bazaars and mosques of the Ottoman Empire, and Isidore van Mens, who widely traveled the East capturing its vibrant life.

But Orientalism was a movement that transcended national borders. On my website, www.kunstexpert.com, you will find an array of artists who embraced this fascination—not only Dutch painters but also French, Belgian, and Italian masters of Orientalist art. The exhibition will highlight figures such as Dirk Homberg, Willem Dooijewaard, Theo Meier, and Raoul du Gardier, whose paintings transport viewers to exotic markets, sunlit courtyards, and the serene landscapes of the East.

This exhibition is an invitation to embark on a journey, to see the world through the eyes of artists who sought adventure, beauty, and inspiration beyond the horizons of their homelands.

This is an exhibition in preparation. We are still looking for appealing work by Orientalist artists. Until the start of this exhibition, only a small part of the available works will be shown on the website. If you are specifically interested in Orientalist art, please contact us so that we can give you a small preview depending on your interest.
